Empowering Communities through Affordable Housing: The River West Choice Neighborhood Project

Affordable housing has a profound impact on individuals and communities. Tulsa, like many cities nationwide, faces a critical shortage of affordable housing. Recent data from a Point In Time count revealed that the lack of affordable housing is a leading cause of homelessness in our community. In response to this pressing issue, THA embarked on a mission to address housing insecurity and provide residents with safe, stable, and affordable homes. Our collaboration with the Tulsa Housing Authority (THA) on River West Choice Neighborhood exemplifies our commitment to creating spaces that foster hope, opportunity, and inclusivity.

The River West Choice Neighborhood represents a monumental step forward in Tulsa's efforts to combat homelessness and housing instability. With a total investment exceeding $180 million, River West is the largest affordable housing initiative in Tulsa's history. Through collaborative efforts between THA, The Michaels Organization (TMO), and KSQ Design’s Tulsa office, River West is not merely a housing development—it's a vibrant community where residents can thrive.

Since its inception, River West has already begun to yield promising outcomes. Average household incomes have increased significantly, and more residents are gaining access to essential services and educational opportunities. By providing greater access to affordable housing, River West empowers individuals and families to build a better future for themselves and their communities. Jaimee Collett, a resident of River West, shared her experience with KOTV Channel 6:

"It's hardly recognizable for me. The energy and atmosphere are completely different. My kids kept saying, 'Is this a dream?' For me, it's the nicest place I have ever lived."

The success of the River West project lies in its comprehensive approach to neighborhood revitalization. Beyond the construction of 435 mixed-income apartments, River West encompasses renovations to West Tulsa Park – Celebration Park, infrastructure improvements, and stormwater management initiatives. Through these efforts, River West has become a model for inclusive and sustainable development, fostering a sense of belonging and pride among its residents.

As we reflect on the impact of the River West Choice Neighborhood project, we are reminded of the vital role that affordable housing plays in shaping the future of our communities. As designers, we believe it is our responsibility to design spaces that enhance wellness in all aspects of life. It has been an honor to create affordable housing solutions in our own community that uplift and empower individuals and families alike. Through intentional design and strategic partnerships with organizations like THA and TMO, we can work together to create resilient communities that increase opportunities and enhance the well-being of the most vulnerable populations.
