University of Northern Iowa Lawther Hall
Modern Student Living
Lawther Hall has stood as an iconic University of Northern Iowa (UNI) residence hall since 1938. Originally designated as a women’s dormitory, Lawther Hall, along with Bartlett Hall and Commons, forms a historically significant cluster of buildings within UNI's landscape.
KSQ's adaptive upgrade to Lawther Hall has transformed its interior, transitioning away from traditional dormitory-style rooms with community bathrooms. This shift to more contemporary suite-style housing aligns with the preferences of sophomore students. The renovated hall features 397 beds, including accommodation for a Resident Life Coordinator (RLC). The hall's livable space expanded through the reclaiming of unoccupied floors.
Life safety systems were brought up to current codes, including a comprehensive fire protection system. A new mechanical system introduced much-needed air-conditioning, enhancing comfort for residents. Accessibility features such as a new passenger elevator and accessible main entry ensured compliance with current code and accessibility standards.
The updated layout includes semi-suites with private baths on each floor, alongside double and single rooms clustered near large community restrooms. Shared spaces such as house lounges, study areas, and laundry facilities were visually connected to the hallway to foster a sense of community.
Further emphasizing sustainability, the renovation qualified for a LEED silver certification, emphasizing energy conservation and the use of renewable building materials. Early establishment of energy efficiency goals optimized cost benefits, considering factors such as implementation standards, associated costs, ease of implementation, and impact on functional requirements.
The revitalization of Lawther Hall not only preserves its historical significance but also enhances its functionality and sustainability. Lawther Hall aligns with UNI's commitment to providing modern, comfortable, and environmentally conscious student housing.
