As Avgerinos was thanking KSQ Architects, the Public Works department, McCloud Group project managers, and construction company Whiting & Turner, he said the collection of professionals had great relationships, which are “very seldom” the case during such projects… “We couldn’t get better for the people of New Canaan,” said the building committee leader.
KSQ was selected to create the first new construction project on the ORU campus in 30 years, and our modern design represents a new era of growth and a critical component in making ORU a competitive force for years to come. The front façade is comprised of a creamy, ceramic tile and blue reflective glass; a striking, modern combination that underscores a fresh new image for the University. On two sides of the building a perforated metal screen wall provides sunscreen by day and can function as a dramatic electronic LED-light display at night.
In keeping with ORU’s philosophy of openness, our design intent was to create a nearly transparent structure with views of the iconic ORU Prayer Tower as well as Lake Evelyn. We accomplished this by creating a blue glass “spine” down the center of the building as well as encasing the majority of the exterior walls in glass. This LED-lit central spine was placed on an axis directly in line with both the Prayer Tower and the lake to facilitate such views. The dramatic slope of the roofline is symbolic of hands upraised–a nod to ORU’s evangelical Christian foundation.
A vibrant, youthful color palette and contemporary furnishings serve to delineate student activity zones, including quiet spaces, performance areas, gaming, and studying. The second floor of the center houses alumni relations and development offices, and serves as a gathering space for alumni events. The second floor has spaces that can be adjusted for small meetings and gatherings, or larger, more formal events.
The project team used Revit modeling for structural analysis and construction documents, the architectural model, and for metal fabrication. The project was completed in 11 months.
