What’s top of mind at KSQ

Global Learning Commons

The Project

Nanuet High School asked KSQ to transform the existing dining facility, media center and adjacent classrooms into a new Global Learning Commons. The existing 60s-era building lacked a true “heart” of the school—a space where students could eat, study and collaborate. The new Learning Commons offers a variety of dining seating options (banquette, high top, horseshoe-shape seating), twice the amount of small group work spaces, project rooms, media sharing resources, and bookstore. Visibility and flexibility are keys to this project—for example, glass-encased project rooms are sandwiched between the media center and the corridor for a see-and-be-seen effect, bookshelves are lower, and the large seminar room can be divided into three rooms or used as one. The media center’s reading room connects to an outdoor patio that can also function as a continuation of the media center and dining area. It connects directly to the school entry lobby and transforms the space into the thriving heart of the campus.
